A forest coffee

Coffee growing
in forest areas

A forest coffee is a premium-quality coffee produced in a very well-preserved environment. This practice of growing forest coffee is completely free of pesticides and fertilisers and embodies our vision of a sustainable coffee industry.

Far from the sun-drenched fields dedicated to intensive farming, these coffee trees grow in a forest with great biodiversity, in the shade of tall trees and sheltered from the sun and rain.

The Storie

Khalid grew up in this area, where he now manages these plantations, as his father and grandfather did before him. Here coffee is a natural heritage that is preserved.

His family has been on this land for a long time. In his grandfather’s time, it was a small coffee plantation created using wild coffee plants sourced from the Choché forest which, according to legend, is the birthplace of coffee in Ethiopia.

Attached to this farm where he grew up, today with help from his brother, Khalid manages it with the same dedication as his father and grandfather before him.

The family-run farm has grown and now extends over 35 hectares, in the Jimma appellation, at an altitude of 2100 m. It is located in a rich environment with a biodiversity which Khalid is working to preserve.

In this forest, a young goat herder named Kaldi (not Khalid!) is said to have discovered the virtues of coffee.

Legend has it that his goats had boundless energy after feeding on the berries of coffee bushes and, intrigued by this phenomenon, Kaldi went on to unlock the potential of coffee!
